Wisdom from the World
Tweet
Journey to the Celestial City #8. In our continuing look at John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," today we find the man, Christian, having been helped out of the Slough of Despond (by who else but "Help"!), he meets one, Mr. Worldly Wiseman. The burden on Christian's back being apparent to Mr. Worldly Wiseman, he offers Christian counsel on how to be rid of it. If Christian would but step off the path to the Wicket Gate and venture instead to Morality Village where the gentleman by the name of Legality lives, he would find freedom. But it doesn't quite work out according to plan. Upon following Mr. Worldly Wiseman's advice Christian is burdened even more and nearly destroyed by the fires of Mt. Sinai. And sin can not be atoned for through obeying the Ten Commandments / legalism. If it could then Christ needlessly died. "By the works of the Law no flesh will be justified." (Romans 3:20a) More to come in the next blog post. Check back soon. (To read this entire blog post series, scroll down to "Pilgrim's Progress Series" in the left sidebar.) pp 9-12
