Whisper of Wickedness

Journey to the Celestial City #39. In our continuing look at John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," today we find the man, Christian, pressing even further through the Valley of the Shadow of Death. Here he is overtaken by confounding thoughts. Such things enter his mind as would only be acceptable to a blasphemer. How could a good man ponder such things? How could he entertain corruption and contempt, irreverence and insults as regards Him who died on the cross? Little does Christian know it really isn't his own thinking at all. For a devil has come close to whisper wickedness in his ear. And have you ever had something appear in the theater of your mind out of the wild blue and of the sordid? At such a time you need to take authority over the wicked spirit. Command silence in the name of Jesus. "And the devil said to Him, 'I will give You all this domain and its glory; for it has been handed over to me, and I give it to whomever I wish. Therefore if You worship before me, it shall all be Yours.' And Jesus answered and said to him, 'It is written, "you shall worship the Lord your God and serve Him only."'"
